CJ’s Corner is a post written exclusively by Adelle’s rabbit.
WOOHOOO!!! Summer vacation!!! This is the best thing that happened since my birthday!
Who am I kidding? You guys are probably thinking, “That CJ, she’s a rabbit! She doesn’t even have a schoolyear to compare the summer to! What’s summer vacation to her?”
Aha! Then that’s where I’ve tricked you. Yes, I’m a rabbit, and yes, I don’t have school (thank goodness), but you forget how much the days change when summer rolls around. I mean really. I’m a rabbit, so of course I should notice how much longer the days are, the spike in heat, and the crickets singing me to sleep with a couple hundred fireflies for nightlights. I live outside, for Pete’s sake!
But another thing I’ve noticed is how much my human counterparts go on actual summer vacations. You plan for them way back in March, pack for them, worry over them, then I have to go to the babysitter while y’all go have fun. Sure, I’ve noticed.
So I decided to have my own vacation.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going far. I suspected there might be some top-of-the-line waterfront property around the creek, so I hired Adelle as my travel agent. She gave me a few pictures of some prime houses that I narrowed down to this villa below.
Jazzy, right? I was just going to worry about what I should pack when Adelle changed her mind.
“CJ,” she said, “I’m starting to think that this is too far away.”
I looked up in surprise. “But gas prices are low this year!” I protested.
She shrugged. “I thought maybe it won’t be as worth your while as something nearer to home. The rent for that bungalow is outrageous, you have to admit.”
I had to admit it. But I pointed out that there weren’t any good vacationing spots around my hutch.
“Then why don’t you make one yourself?” she suggested.
I stopped in my furry tracks. Why hadn’t I thought of that? So we set to work immediately. I would build a classy vacation house that would be the talk of the woods.
Halfway through the project, Adelle stopped by to check on my work. “CJ!” she exclaimed. “Are you ever going to town!”
I paused for a moment and dryly twitched my dirty nose at her. “No,” I replied airily. “I’m going to China.”
She stopped and stared at me for a second, then burst out laughing. “Thought it might be a better vacation spot?” she chortled.
I grinned at her and resumed my digging.
Whew! This is harder work than I thought. I can lay down and stretch out inside, but there are some annoying rocks I’ll have to ask Adelle to pry out. I’ll need much more room than that for a snack stash, and I’ll have to make room for a small litter box, a nest of hay for snoozing in, and a comfy, cool recliner in the entryway so I can relax while I watch my friends. It might take another week, dunno, maybe two. But it’ll be worth it when I’m through!
Happy Summer, y’all!
